Developing Foundations: Grades 3-4

I am delighted to welcome you to General Education Center's Grades 3-4 "Reading and Writing" Class, where we will lay the foundation for English writing structures, reading comprehension skills, beginner's poetry, and paragraph writing fundamentals!

In this introductory writing course, we will equip our students with the necessary skills to comprehend and effectively articulate concepts from a text into their writing. We will explore beginner's poetry, teaching simplified poetic devices and demonstrating how to use figurative language in writing. Through reading both fiction and nonfiction, students will learn to distinguish between main ideas and supporting details, facts versus opinions, text structures, writing styles, and more, while expanding their vocabulary.

During our dedicated writing classes, students will work from National Geographic's "Great Writing, Great Paragraphs" book, which offers numerous practical activities with simplified explanations and examples of the writing process, helping students develop masterful final pieces of writing.

We will maintain an active and fun virtual classroom atmosphere by rotating topics and subjects to ensure students continue to learn while incorporating consistent review to reinforce concepts.

Our weekly 1.5-hour class is limited to a maximum of 8 students, promoting an active group atmosphere that encourages participation and teamwork. Our goal is to ensure that every child reaches their full potential! All class materials and homework will be assigned and submitted through Google Classroom.

At General Education Center, we strive to provide equal opportunities for every student to learn and acquire essential skills that will enable them to excel in their daily lives and future academic endeavors.

Advancing from Foundations: Grades 5-6

We are thrilled to offer our continuation of General Education Center's Grades 5-6 "Reading and Writing" Class, and we would like to extend a warm welcome to you! In this course, we aim to foster our students' natural progression of skills previously learned, while advancing them to a new level more suited for intermediate learners. Our goal is to encourage retention of previous skills while building upon them to create a strong foundation for academic success.

Our students will explore advanced reading and writing skills, including close reading of complex texts, interpretation of narratives, and mastery of structural and stylistic aspects of writing. They will also learn to create detailed, masterful pieces of writing, including paragraphs and essays, while continuing to observe renowned poetry and the key writing foundations authors use to enhance their texts.

We will be using National Geographic's "Great Writing, Great Paragraphs to Great Essays" book to support our students' learning in class. This book provides numerous examples and practical tasks to develop their understanding of advanced writing, enabling them to extend their writing skills and create more complex and sophisticated pieces of writing.

Our students will benefit from our consistent bi-weekly rotation of subjects learned, which incorporates regular review of the foundations of "English reading and writing." This approach ensures that our students maintain their understanding and further their learning.

We strive to create a fun, active, and accessible virtual learning environment that encourages participation and teamwork while allowing our students to progress in their future educational endeavors and reach their full potential. The class is a 1.5-hour class run weekly, with small class sizes (maximum of 8 students) that promote an active group atmosphere. All class materials and homework will be assigned and handed in via Google Classroom.

Demonstrating Progress and Creating Mastery: Grades 7-8

Welcome to our advanced writing course, where we take your writing skills to new heights! Each student will have the opportunity to demonstrate their progress and build on their developmental skills previously learnt, to create a sense of mastery within their writing. With an emphasis on applying foundational knowledge and collectively transferring it throughout their writing, our students are given the tools they need to succeed and excel in advanced high-school English atmospheres.

As we continue in the development of reading comprehension, annotation, and "close reading" of academic, narrative, and poetic texts, we're also maintaining a keen focus on the structural and stylistic aspects of writing. Our students will have the opportunity to explore the works of famous authors who have shaped the world of literature, learning from them and applying the skills and figurative language they observe within their writing. In addition, we will solidify their understanding of how to write, structure, and effectively organize an essay, allowing them to adequately research, cite, and develop an advanced research paper.

In this course, our students delve deep into texts, analyzing, inferring, interpreting and applying a plethora of literary skills to substantiate their self-confidence in their writing. Our meticulously chosen texts challenge our students and stimulate their critical thinking, providing opportunities to synthesize and expand their academic horizons.

Through analysis of multi-layered fictional/nonfictional, essay-based, and poetic writing that is open to interpretation, our students learn to express themselves both within and outside academic contexts. They will master the art of organizing their thoughts logically, including vibrant vocabulary and figurative language in their writing, which will enhance their writing skills and substantiate their ability to communicate effectively.

We believe in providing our students with quality materials and activities that will enable them to maintain and extend their organizational writing skills, and that is why we use National Geographic's “Great Writing, Great Essays to Research Papers” book. Our bi-weekly rotation of subjects learned ensures that our students maintain their advanced understanding of the principles of the English language and become accomplished readers and writers.

Our class is run weekly for 1.5 hours, with small class sizes (max of 8 students) that create an active group atmosphere, encouraging participation and teamwork. All class materials and homework will be assigned and handed in via Google Classroom, providing an accessible virtual learning space for our students to excel in stimulating high-school learning environments.

Our goal is to ensure that every child reaches their full potential, providing them with an abundance of potential learning opportunities throughout their futures. Join us in our mission to become accomplished writers and critical thinkers!
